IDA Art Residency
The IDA Residency kicked off with its first session in June, welcoming Shiuan Chang, a composer of Taiwanese origin based in New York, and Almudena Romero, an artist of Spanish origin based in London. The two artists were inspired by the song of local birds and experimented with the surrounding vegetation respectively. During these weeks, the two residents exchanged ideas about their artistic practices within the natural setting of EBBIO. Almudena Romero carried out site-specific experiments using local plant species and agricultural materials to study the reactions of organic surfaces to light and Mediterranean climatic conditions. Shiuan Chang worked on his ‘People Concerto’ project, characterised by complex structures, incorporating new thematic layers inspired by the local environment. Shiuan thus composed a new work for contrabass flute for the world-renowned flautist Matteo Cesari, drawing on an intimate understanding of low-frequency textures and breath. He explores the sonic possibilities of this instrument within the contemplative setting of the IDA artist residency.
